Readers

When Sacred Scripture is read in the Church, God himself speaks to his people, and Christ, present in his word, proclaims the Gospel. Therefore, the readings of the Word of God should be listened to with reverence by all, for they are an element of paramount importance in the Liturgy. While in the readings of Sacred Scripture the Word of God is addressed to all people of every age and is understandable to them, a deeper understanding and effectiveness of the word is fostered, however, through a living commentary on the word, that is, through the homily, as part of the liturgical action. (General Instruction of the Roman Missal [GIRM], no. 29)

It is essential that those who exercise the ministry of lector, even if they have not received formal institution, be truly suitable and carefully prepared so that the faithful may develop a deep and vibrant love for Sacred Scripture through listening to the sacred readings. Their preparation must be primarily spiritual, but it also requires what we might call technical preparation. Spiritual preparation presupposes at least biblical and liturgical formation. The purpose of their biblical formation is to equip lectors with the ability to understand the readings in context and to perceive, in the light of faith, the central point of the revealed message. Liturgical formation should enable lectors to understand the meaning and structure of the Liturgy of the Word and the importance of its connection to the Eucharistic Liturgy. Technical preparation should equip lectors for public reading, whether using their own voice or with the aid of sound equipment.
