marriage

Marriage is one of the seven sacraments. It is a sacred and perpetual covenant between a man and a woman, in which they commit to love, honor, and be faithful to one another. This sacrament reflects Christ's love for the Church and is considered a reflection of God's love. Marriage is more than a wedding day; it is a lifelong vocation that requires careful discernment, proper preparation, and the support of the Christian community. For couples preparing for sacramental marriage in the Diocese of Austin, there are specific requirements designed to help them build happy and lasting relationships. Key aspects of Catholic marriage include: Unity and indissolubility: Marriage is an indissoluble, lifelong bond, meaning the couple is united "until death do them part."

Fidelity: Spouses commit to being faithful to each other, both physically and emotionally.

Openness to children: The couple must be open to procreation and willing to raise their children in the Catholic faith.

Sacramental Grace: The couple receives God's grace to help them live their marriage vows, especially in difficult times.

The marriage ceremony usually takes place within a mass, where the couple exchange vows before God, a priest and witnesses, making their union sacramental.
